GARSTANG'S largest flower show enjoyed a spectacular start at the weekend, with unprecedented crowds arriving from across the north west.
St Helen's Church, in the village of Churchtown, opened its doors to visitors for the five-day festival held annually to commemorate St Helen's Day.
There were displays around the church featuring artifacts not often seen, and displays illustrating what lies behind the foundation of the oldest church in the district.
There were also wedding dresses and antique christening gowns, displays illustrating the hidden work and meaning behind things you would expect to find in a church, quizzes and international displays.
Rev Andrew Wilkinson, vicar and area dean of Garstang, said: "It went very well. The weather was kind to us and we had lots of positive feedback from people.
"We managed to raise more funds on the first day than we did the preceeding year. But we like to focus on the welcome, not the money, and it is lovely to know that is the case."
On Sunday, the 30-strong Braunschweig Diocesan Youth Brass Band from Germany helped to celebrate their diocesan link with the area.
Rev Wilkinson said: "They played fantastically. They managed to make an arrangement which included the best of English music and the best of German music and it was wonderful. They really made an effort."
Rev Wilkinson is particularly looking forward to a performance by the internationally famous One Voice Community Gospel Choir which will take place on Wednesday, August 20.
He continued: "We aimed to give people a sense of what it means to be a church in a country parish."
