"Too big" Garstang hotel sign may shrink

THE saga of the sign outside the Crofters Hotel, Cabus, has taken a new twist, with the owners saying they now want to lop more than a metre off the over-large advert.
Hotel owners Derek and Nicola Cheetham are facing prosecution by Wyre Council for alleged breach of planning law as their 5.5 metre sign close to the A6 allegedly breaches planning law.
As reported in this week's Courier after erecting the sign, the Cheethams submitted a retrospective planning application which was rejected - and they also lost a subsequent appeal.
In an effort to resolve the situation Mr and Mrs Cheetham have now lodged another application with Wyre Council.
It shows the plastic sign, reduced in size to measure 4.5m by 2m by 0.3m and erected at a height of 4.5m from the ground.
Derek Cheetham told the Courier: "We have submitted a revised planning application to reduce the height of the sign by over one metre - one quarter of its current size - and hope everyone concerned will agree this is an acceptable compromise.
"As a landmark hotel in the area and employer of some 30 local staff we need a prominent sign to help attract guests. Our main aim has simply been to make the Crofters Hotel and Tavern even more attractive as a place to eat and stay, and promote it accordingly. This has been backed by substantial investment.
"It has been very encouraging and gratifying to have received such strong support for our case from many local people and customers. We have been working hard for many months to resolve the problem and hope the end is now in sight."
The council, which earlier this week said it was intending to prosecute over the original sign, hopes to make a decision on the new application by November 5.

The owners of The Crofters Hotel, Cabus, Derek and Nicola Cheetham put up the new sign - without applying for planning permission - in front of the hotel when they took over the business last year.
They later applied for planning permission, which was refused because planners considered the sign to be too large.
The couple then appealed to the government against the decision but their appeal was dismissed earlier this summer.
After losing the appeal Mr and Mrs Cheetham said they were "considering their remaining options" for the sign's future.
But Wyre Council now says it is planning to prosecute them for alleged breaches of planning law.
A Wyre spokesman said: "We are intending to prosecute on the grounds that the display of an advertisement without consent is an offence under the provisions of Section 224 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990."
Mr and Mrs Cheetham have previously hit out at both Wyre and the government for their lack of support for their business, into which they have invested £300,000 since May 2007. The 5.5 metre high sign cost £15,000.
Wyre Council says the sign is too large and not in keeping with the local environment, and must be removed.
Asked for a response to the council's statement Mrs Cheetham said: "We are working with Wyre Council to resolve the situation as soon as possible by reducing the size of the sign."
