Coach park plan back on agenda

PLANS for a coach park to help boost summer-time tourism in Garstang are back on the public agenda after being refused earlier this year.
Garstang Partnership officials had wanted to see a three-space coach park developed on land at Garstang Sports and Social Club in time for this summer's tourist trade.
But Wyre Council unexpectedly turned down the plans saying the entrance to the site, off High Street, was unsuitable for coaches and would be a road safety hazard. Now though GP officials and bosses of the sports and social club have re-submitted the plans after making changes.
GP official Angela Kershaw said the site would conform to county highways standards and would only be able to accept 50 seater coaches to avoid causing potential highway problems.
She said a robust booking system would be put in place, with Health and Safety regulations stipulated at the booking stage.
The GP and sports club believe a coach park will give Garstang a boost. Charges made for coach parking would help add to the income of the sports and social club. The coach park would operate on a summer season/daytime only basis.
The GP has previously said coach companies sometimes by-passed Garstang due to the lack of coach parking space. They have also pointed out that Garstang does not regularly feature in day-trip/excursion tours from places such as Blackpool - meaning other destinations reap the spending benefits from visitors who might otherwise enjoy a few hours in Garstang.
The coach park will cost around £30,000 to layout and surface.
The possibility of a coach or bus parking bay has been mooted in Garstang before, but there have been difficulties finding a suitable site.
Wyre Council has agreed to sell the land off High Street to the sports and social club, but the sale process has been delayed.
A council spokeswoman said: "The sale has not yet gone through, although we are in correspondence with the lawyers of the Garstang Sports and Social Club."
