GARSTANG'S award-winning Millennium Green is set for a boost over the next few months as a special family area is created.
The riverside green has become a popular routeway over the past few years, winning various environmental awards.
Now the charitable group which runs the stretch of land next to the River Wyre plans to create a special family area to encourage its use by families and school groups.
Green management committee chairman Ron Freeland said: "We intend this area to be free of dogs and keep it secure so that users can enjoy a picnic, or perhaps sit and enjoy the beauty of the green."
He said it would also be a safe area for families to celebrate birthdays outdoors. The impetus to create a family area has come from suggestions that the green is not friendly enough to children, schools and families.
The area earmarked is immediately north of the green's boundary with Garstang Rugby Club's grounds.
On Monday Green officials held a media briefing to highlight the appeal to raise cash for the project.
Mr Freeland expects the total cost of the items needed to be around £2,000.
It is hoped much of the work will be carried out during autumn and spring, with a formal opening before May. Wyre volunteer Rangers will be involved.
