THE Knott End to Fleetwood ferry is to sail all-year round after Wyre Council agreed to fund a regular winter service.
It will mean the establishment of what has proved to be a valuable and sustainable transport link between the two communities, with a number of additional environmental benefits over a summer-only service.
These include a lower risk of vandalism to the ferry dock and slipway as it will be in regular use, as well as reduced dredging requirements through constant use of the channel.
A trial service was carried out between November 2007 and March 2008 during which time the ferry was used by 6,537 passengers.
No significant damage to the ferry was reported during the trial period and passenger satisfaction was rated as excellent following a number of compliments and no complaints.
The findings were presented to Wyre's cabinet recently when council leaders voted to fund a winter service throughout the 10-year contract with operator Wyre Marine Service, subject to a review after three years.
A free bus will be provided on occasions when the ferry cannot run.
Funding will be split between Wyre Council and Lancashire County Council.
Cabinet member Coun Peter Hawley said: "The review of the service that operated over last winter, and the number of passengers who used the service, clearly demonstrates that this is a valuable and well-used service.
"Failure to continue with an all-year round service would in my opinion now be a retrograde step.
"I therefore strongly support the continuation of the winter service for the benefit of our local residents."
