A LOTTERY grant worth thousands of pounds has given a successful Garstang club a much-needed boost.
Garstang Ladies Hockey Club has received £7,167 through the Awards for All scheme, administered via the Big Lottery Fund for small
community projects.
The cash will be used to help form a development squad which will
channel junior members into playing competitive hockey on Saturdays.
Coach Dave Gee said: "We want to develop youngsters and also give an opportunity for new players to
experience what it's like to play.
"Part of the funding has been used to purchase training and specialist coaching equipment to let us hold
sessions in Garstang."
The squad, which includes 45 senior and junior players,
currently trains at Preston Sports Arena, but from Monday, September 29, free open coaching sessions will be held for girls aged 12-18 at the YMCA centre, Garstang.
Mr Gee added: "We're absolutely over the moon that our bid was
successful.
"We have always been a self-funding, non-profit organisation and over the years committee members have had to dip into their pockets to keep the club afloat.
"It's been very very hard to keep our heads above water and this grant has now given us some space to move forward."
The club celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, when the first team was promoted into the Premier Division of the Central Lancashire Women's HA.
Now Mr Gee is hoping to move senior players forward into the national feeder league.
He also hopes the grant will put more pressure on Garstang to push for its own all-weather facilities.
