GARSTANG Swimming Club has clinched the top spot in the Micro League Swim- offs.
Following a highly successful 2008 season which cumulated in Garstang Gators clinching the 'C' division title, the Micro League squad triumphed after travelling to West View, Preston, for the 'swim-offs' competing against Colne, Preston Seals and Rosegrove - with teams emerging in first and second place to be promoted.
Coach Ian Kirk said: "This was always going to be a close encounter and every point won was going to be invaluable. We were not too sure what to expect!
"Our young squad were up for the challenge and with just some relay events left, we were lying in a healthy 2nd position behind a strong Rosegrove team. This placed us in a promotion position.
"However, our relay teams proved to be very strong with some excellent 1st and 2nd placings. This, coupled with some disqualifications from Rosegrove, resulted in a very tight finish with the Gators finally finishing in 1st position by just 2 points!"
"2008 has been a very successful year for our Micro League Squad.
"Our target for this year was to make the swim - offs and so to firstly top the division and then go on to win the swim-offs was an amazing feat by our young swimmers and beyond all expectations.
Club captains Jon Kirk and Laura Chiverton were invited to collect the trophies and perform a lap of honour on behalf of the team.
Final Placings were;
1st Garstang Gators; 2nd Rosegrove; 3rd Preston Seals; 4th Colne
Mr Kirk said: "For 2009, we have some very promising young swimmers coming though, which is very encouraging.
"The challenge for us now as a small club, is to try and consolidate ourselves in the 'B' division, which will be no mean feat, as to us, it is like making the FA premier league!
"But I have no doubt our squad will rise to the challenge and give it their best shot. Congratulations to all who have swum during the season.
"All we want now is for YMCA to give us permission to put up a trophy cabinet at Garstang pool!"
